Allemagne, 1939. Pour échapper à la stérilisation des métis allemands, Leo Neumann, 15 ans, venu de Rhénanie est confié par son oncle au tenancier d’un cabaret exotique à Berlin. Léo se trouve livré à lui-même dans un univers qui est pour lui aussi inconnu que révoltant. A la suite d’une bagarre, il est jeté à la rue. Mohamed Husen un artiste africain du cabaret, le fait engager dans les studios de cinéma de Babelsberg en manque de figuration noire pour les films de propagande coloniale. Bien qu’en sécurité dans l’enceinte des studios, Leo supporte mal de se faire foncer la peau pour jouer les sauvages dans une jungle en carton-pâte. Il rencontre alors une de ses idoles, Louis Brody, seule vedette noire du cinéma allemand. Ildevient son assistant et intègre la communauté afro germanique. Écartelé entre la nécessité de survie et la quête identitaire, Leo accepte de se fondre dans l’univers de cet Hollywood nazi. Lorsqu’enfin il a l’occasion de sortir de Babelsberg, il rencontre Erika, la jeune épouse métisse de Brody et tombe aussitôt amoureux. Mais dans la rue, l’adolescent assiste impuissant au lynchage d’une jeune femme juive. Ébranlé, terrifié et furieux, Leo se révolte et sort des ornières. Il apprend alors que sa mère, communiste, est morte dans un camp. Rejeté par Erika, viré par Brody, sans plus ni famille ni patrie à laquelle s’accrocher, Leo, transformé, ne pense plus qu’à quitter l’Allemagne. C’est alors qu’en prévision d’une super production nécessitant une figuration massive, des centaines de soldats africains prisonniers sont parqués dans Babelsberg. Leo se lie avec l’un d’entre eux, Doumbia, originaire de Tougan. L’homme lui rappelle un père africain qu’il n’a jamais connu et une Afrique qui lui paraît un refuge. Cette rencontre va changer le cours de leur histoire. Au cœur de la machine à fantasmes hitlériens, les deux hommes vont découvrir le courage de briser leurs chaines. Alors que le tournage se déroule en Italie, ils en profitent pour s’enfuir. Mais seul Leo atteindra Tougan.

Germany 1939. To escape the sterilization procedure inflicted to mixed-race Germans, Leo Neumann a 15-year-old boy from Rhineland is taken to Berlin by his uncle and left in the hands of the owner of an exotic cabaret. Leo is then on his own, in a world that is as unknown to him as upsetting. But as a result of a fight, he is thrown out on the street. Majub Mohamed Husen, an African cabaret artist, has him hired at Babelsberg’s studios as there’s a lack of black extras on the sets of colonial propaganda films. Although he’s safe on the studio premises, Leo hates getting his skin darkened to play the wild African in a “cardboard jungle”. There, he meets one of his idols, Louis Brody, the only black celebrity of German cinema. He becomes Brody’s assistant and joins the Afro-German community. Torn between survival and quest for identity, Leo gives in and blends into this Nazi Hollywood. When he finally gets the opportunity to leave Babelsberg, he meets Erika, Brody’s mixed-race wife, and immediately falls in love. But that day, the teenager feels powerless as he witnesses the lynching of a young Jewish woman in Berlin’s streets. Shaken, terrified and furious, Leo rebels and wants his way out. He learns that his mother, once a communist, died in a camp. Rejected by Erika, fired by Brody, with no more family or homeland to hang on to, Leo is deeply affected and haunted by the thought of leaving Germany. At this point, as the Babelsberg’s teams prepare for a blockbuster like production, hundreds of African war prisoners are piled up in Babelsberg. Leo quickly gets friendly with one of them, Doumbia from Tougan. The man reminds him of an African father he never knew, and for the first time, Africa appears as a welcoming land to him. The encounter changes the course of both their stories. At the heart of Hitler’s fantasy machine, the two men find the courage to break their chains. While filming takes place in Italy, they take the opportunity to escape. But Leo will be the only one to reach Tougan.
